Abstract. To address ambitious goals of carbon neutrality set at national and city scales, a number of atmospheric networks have been deployed to monitor greenhouse gas (GHG) concentrations in and around cities. To convert these measurements into estimates of emissions from cities, atmospheric models are used to simulate the transport of various trace gases and help interpret these measurements. We set up a modelling framework using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model applied at a high spatial resolution (up to 400 m) to simulate the atmospheric transport of GHGs and attempt a preliminary interpretation of the observations provided by the Munich Urban Carbon Column Network (MUCCnet). Building on previous analyses using similar measurements performed within a campaign for the city of Berlin and its surroundings (Zhao et al., 2019), our modelling framework has been improved regarding the initialization of tagged tracers, model settings, and input data. To assess the model performance, we validate the modelled output against two local weather stations and two radiosonde observations, as well as observed column GHG concentrations. The measurements were provided by the measurement campaign that was carried out from 1 to 30 August 2018. The modelled wind matches well with the measurements from the weather stations, with wind speeds slightly overestimated. In general, the model is able to reproduce the measured slant column concentrations of CH4 and their variability, w...

The latest satellite in the Landsat series, Landsat-9, was successfully launched on 27 September 2021, equipped with the Operational Land Imager-2 (OLI-2) sensor, continuing the legacy of OLI/Landsat-8. To evaluate the uncertainties in water surface reflectance derived from OLI-2, this study conducts a comprehensive performance assessment of six atmospheric correction (AC) methods—DSF, C2RCC, iCOR, L2gen (NIR-SWIR1), L2gen (NIR-SWIR2), and Polymer—using in-situ measurements from 14 global sites, including 13 AERONET-OC stations and 1 MOBY station, collected between 2021 and 2023. Error analysis shows that L2gen (NIR-SWIR1) (RMSE ≤ 0.0017 sr−1, SA = 6.33°) and L2gen (NIR-SWIR2) (RMSE ≤ 0.0019 sr−1, SA = 6.38°) provide the best results across four visible bands, demonstrating stable performance across different optical water types (OWTs) ranging from clear to turbid water. Following these are C2RCC (RMSE ≤ 0.0030 sr−1, SA = 5.74°) and Polymer (RMSE ≤ 0.0027 sr−1, SA = 7.76°), with DSF (RMSE ≤ 0.0058 sr−1, SA = 11.33°) and iCOR (RMSE ≤ 0.0051 sr−1, SA = 12.96°) showing the poorest results. By comparing the uncertainty and consistency of Landsat-9 (OLI-2) with Sentinel-2A/B (MSI) and S-NPP/NOAA20 (VIIRS), results show that OLI-2 has similar uncertainties to MSI and VIIRS in the blue, blue-green, and green bands, with RMSE differences within 0.0002 sr−1. In the red band, the OLI-2 uncertainties are lower than those of MSI but higher than those of VIIRS, with an RMSE difference of...

17. Observation of edge bound states in the continuum at truncated silicon ...
1 dag geleden · To host such a mode, the terminating row of dielectric pillars should have a different diameter from the rest of the pillars. Depending on the ...
Bound states in the continuum are optical modes with extremely high-quality factors and narrow resonances, which exist in the dispersion spectrum of the radiative region above the light line. A unique bound state in the continuum is supported at the edge of truncated photonic crystals, which is a type of a Fabry-Pérot type bound state in the continuum, but has never been observed in experiments. Here, we demonstrate the bound states in the continuum supported at the edge array of silicon (Si) pillars whose diameter is bigger than that of the rest of a Si-pillar two-dimensional photonic crystal. We also show the tunability of the resonance and surface sensitivity of the mode when Si pillars are conformally coated with nanometer-thick aluminium oxide films. The presence of an oxide nanofilm improves the quality factor by over 60 % and shifts the resonance wavelength. Such behavior signifies the substantial potential of the bound states in the continuum on two-dimensional photonic crystals for post-fabrication tuning of the quality factor and surface sensing applications. Optical bound states in the continuum is a highly localized mode supported in various systems. Authors demonstrate such optical modes that propagate at the edge of truncated photonic crystal structures composed of an array of silicon pillars.
